Farmers are coming up with creative new ways to keep the local food flowing through the winter. See below for a list of winter programs that are available through local farms. You can contact your favorite farmer directly to find out they’re planning. For a list of email and phone contacts go to the Sound Food Map at http://www.soundfood.org/soundfoodmaps/soundfoodmap.html

Don’t be afraid to stock up on enough staples to last you until Christmas, at least. Many vegetables can be stored in a cool dry place for several months. I keep mine in boxes in an unheated downstairs room that doesn’t freeze. Never store onions and potatoes in the same box – it shortens the storage life of both of them. Want to learn more about storage options? I just found a great site that can teach you how to store almost anything. It’s called Still Tasty, and offers an easily searchable database of information on optimal storage conditions, length of time that you can safely store things, and much more.

Here are some of the programs we know about:

Laughing Crow Farm’s Winter Storage Signup:
Betsey Wittick has a signup sheet for bulk orders of potatoes, garlic and onions. You can specify how many pounds and what variety of each you would like to order. She’ll be accepting the last signups for this year at this Saturday’s Bainbridge Farmers’ Market. The orders are usually ready for pickup a week or two before Thanksgiving. I usually order about 20 pounds of potatoes, 10 pounds of onions, and lots of garlic to get my two-person household through the winter. Ask Betsey about which varieties store best – I’ve enjoyed stored German Butterball potatoes as late as January or February.

Persephone Farm Storage Boxes:
Rebecca Slattery is offering special boxes of produce specially selected for winter storage. The box is $95, and can be picked up at this Saturday’s market if you make arrangements by calling her at 360-297-1877. Each box includes:
10 pounds of fingerling potatoes
10 pounds of German Butterballs
10 pounds of onions
15 pounds of winter squash
10 heads of garlic
Persephone may

John's Garden Winter CSA:
Subscribers get a weekly box of food grown right here on Bainbridge Island.
from November 2 to January 25. (Except November 30th) The cost is $180. This comes to $15 per week. Boxes will be picked up at Real Foods on Winslow Way on Mondays. Email John Chang ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ). For questions, email John or call him at 206-755-9400.
Weekly boxes will include a selection from the following list:
• Winter Squash
• Potatoes
• Garlic
• Onions
• Leeks
• Kale
• Mustard Greens

Other Winter CSA programs:
Several existing CSA programs will continue into the winter. Butler Green Farms will open every Tuesday from noon to 7 pm for pickup, usually through mid-December or early January. Farmhouse Organics and Leapfrog Farm continue to publish a weekly update on product that’s available through their CSA as long as they’re still harvesting. Contact the farmers directly for more information, you’ll find their contact info on our Farm Map.
