The Bainbridge Winter Farmers’ Market opens this Saturday, just in time to provide all the raw materials for your Thanksgiving feast. Bring your shopping list on Saturday beginning at 10 am to Eagle Harbor Congregational Church in downtown Winslow (the white church with the steeple), and fill your bags with everything you need for a locally-grown holiday meal. The Market will be open until 3 pm.

Island farms have been spared a hard frost so far, so there are still lots of veggies to harvest. There are even a few tomatoes still on the vine! Area farmers have worked through the rain and wind all week to get ready for Saturday, including Persphone Farm, Laughing Crow, Butler Green, Terra Bella, Holly Lane Garden, Sundown Ridge, The Soup Garden gals and both Bainbridge Island and Perennial Vineyards. I polled them for a list of what they’ll be bringing, and it’s a long one:

•    Salad greens (lots)
•    Island-grown cornmeal from Laughing Crow Farm
•    Potatoes, including good mashers like Caribe, Snowflake, Alby’s Gold and Yukon gold
•    Sweet Potatoes, both white and orange-fleshed.
•    Tomatoes (!) –Butler Green and Persephone have tomatoes on their list
•    Island-grown Strawberries (frozen)
•    Onions, including little Italian cippolinis
•    Garlic
•    Shallots
•    Braising greens like chard and kale.
•    Broccoli rabe, aka Rapini
•    Carrots
•    Local eggs from pastured chickens (“dozens and dozens”!)
•    Broccoli florettes
•    Brussels sprouts
•    Pumpkins for pies – sugar pies and heirloom long pie pumpkins
•    Herbs, parsley and cilantro
•    Winter squash, including Butternut, Delicata, Kabocha, Acorn and more
•    Parsnips, sweet turnips, and rutabagas
•    Arugula
•    Pea vines

In addition to this very long list, there will be fresh-baked pumpkin pies, artisan bread, home-made soup )for there or to go), fall flower bouquets, and holiday wreaths. And both Perennial Vintners and Bainbridge Island Winery will be there with a selection of turkey-friendly Island-grown wine.
