When I bite into one of Karen Selvar's Island-grown strawberries, the sweet juice is like a mouth full of warm sunshine. And, fortunately for strawberry-lovers, the berries are ripening even though our cool, wet spring has slowed them down a bit.

At Bainbridge Island Farms, Karen is harvesting Shuksan strawberries now, and expects the Rainier variety to ripen next week. Asked about her favorite way to eat the flavorful berries, Karen's quick response was "just fresh" or "sometimes with a little chocolate." I couldn't agree more! If, however, your summer experience isn't complete without strawberry shortcake, check out these delicious recipes on one of our favorite local food blogs.
Whether you want to eat these luscious berries fresh, cook them or preserve some for the dark days of winter, you can buy a carton or a flat at the Farm Stand on Day Road. The Stand opens at 9:00 a.m. and closes when the freshly picked berries are sold out. If you'd like to know if the Farm Stand is open on a given day, you can call 842-1429 and listen to the message Karen records daily. We'll also have Karen's berries at the Ferry Farm Stand every Wednesday evening at the Bainbridge ferry terminal, as long as they're in season.
The harvest will likely continue through part of July, but don't miss the opportunity to visit the Farm Stand at the north end of the Island, enjoy the farmland vista and savor the sweetness of our Island bounty!
