Cross-referencing between several online sources that rate the sustainability and health concerns of seafood choices, we compiled a list of those that rank as “best choices” and "to avoid" that are commonly available at local markets. Alaskan salmon and spot prawns are two good choices that are available now. Click on "Read More" to see the complete list.

Best choices:

  • Cod (Pacific, longline caught)
  • Dungeness Crab
  • Halibut
  • Mussels
  • Oysters
  • Pink Shrimp (Oregon, often sold as "shrimp meat")
  • Rockfish (longline caught)
  • Spot prawns (from Washington, Canada, Alaska, considered the most well-managed shrimp fishery in the U.S)
  • Sablefish (black cod) from Alaska or Canada
  • Salmon (wild, Alaskan)
  • Trout (rainbow, farmed)
  • Tuna (albacore, U.S., Canada)

Seafood to avoid

  • Chilean Sea Bass
  • King crab (Imported -- U.S. caught is OK)
  • Mahimahi (Imported -- U.S. troll/pole caught is OK)
  • Monkfish
  • Shrimp/prawns (Imported -- U.S. farmed or wild are OK)
  • Swordfish (Imported -- U.S. caught is OK)
  • Tilapia (Asia -- U.S. farmed is OK)
  • Orange Roughy
  • Tuna, Bluefin
  • Tuna, yelloweye (imported longline -- U.S. troll is OK)

You can find complete lists at Seafood Watch or by texting "30644" with the message "FISH," followed by the name of the specific fish in question (very handy if you’re in the grocery store)
